What a night! 💫 *
Last night we celebrated five years of Rubys Awards and this year’s Rubys grantees! In just the past few years, the Rubys program has granted over $620,000 to 82 local artists. *
We were thrilled to spend the evening (and all of our days) with so many creative and inspiring individuals, collectives, and colleagues (including THE Ruby Lerner, founder of @creativecap and Rubys Award namesake!)

Deadline extended: @citylitproject's chapbook competition is open to any poet who has not had a full-length book of poetry published by a professional press.

One first-place winner receives publication by CityLit Press, $350, and 50 copies. Publication includes professional design, wholesale availability through Ingram, and on-line retail pages at Amazon.com, barnesandnoble.com, indiebound.org, and other sources. If possible, an offer to appear at a CityLit Project public event may be extended.

Dr. @lesliekinghammond, Author, Art Historian and Senior Visual Arts Advisor at The Betsy Hotel, and Senior Fellow at the Foundation, is hosting Cross Currents: The African Diaspora in the Global Continuum this afternoon at the @thebetsyhotel in #Miami at @artbasel.

She will be joined by Dr. @debwillisphoto (Chair, Department of Photography & Imaging @ NYU), Marilyn Holifield, J.D. (Senior Partner, Holland and Knight & Board member, PAMM), Rosie Gordon Wallace (@diasporavibe) (Founder/Director, DIASPORA VIBE, Consultant, The Art of Black – GMCVB), @geoffreyphilp (Poet, Novelist and Playwright) to reflect on the topic through the work of artists whose work deals with diasporic and exilic experience, such as those exhibited in The Betsy's Basel Show: @aidamuluneh, @a.changcastan, @rorosiemarie, Sonle Sory, Mario Algaze, Maria Magdalena Compos-Pons, and @thekylemeyer. *
To frame the discussion, speakers and audience are asked to consider the following: The history of Africans in the Diaspora has been an exercise of incredible triumph juxtaposed against a backdrop of colossal human tragedy. Yet, in the words of Patterson and Kelley (2012), ‘Diaspora is both a process and a condition. As a process it is constantly being remade through movement, migration, and travel, as well as imagined through thought, cultural production, and political struggle. Yet, as a condition, it is directly tied to the process by which it is being made and remade …’ *
