The Contemporary is a nomadic, non-collecting art museum that serves as an incubator for site-specific and subject-oriented work. The Contemporary fosters unexpected art encounters and thrives on three guiding principles: artists matter, collaboration is key, and audience is everywhere.

Founded in 1989, The Contemporary expands the idea of a museum into an incubator of inclusive spaces and operates as a generative resource for Baltimore. The Contemporary brings museum caliber artists to Baltimore to develop responsive and risk taking site-specific projects. They offer resources, grant opportunities, and an artist retreat for local artists to develop their practice, and produce educational programs for a broad public, ranging from middle schoolers to adults.

"The Robert W. Deutsch Foundation has been a major supporter and visioning partner with The Contemporary since before our relaunch in 2013. From the beginning the Deutsch Foundation saw the potential our organization had to bridge divides within the Baltimore arts community through the creation of thought provoking exhibitions, a range of educational programming, and a suite of resources for the creative community. The Deutsch Foundation helped The Contemporary realize the first Artist Retreat for Baltimore city and county artists. They champion individual growth and learning, and have supported our staff development, while helping to strengthen an already vibrant artistic Baltimore." - Ginevra Shay, Artistic Director
